In Aotearoa/New Zealand, in December 1642, the first encounter between Māori and Europeans took place. In Mohua (now Golden Bay) Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri and Abel Tasman met eachother. Perhaps because of miscommunication on both sides people died and got wounded.
The meeting was a meeting between two cultures and the event does not stand on its own: it touches upon major societal issues, both in present-day New Zealand and the Netherlands. It takes imagination to achieve a better understanding of this, from different perspectives. Therefore, Project View on Golden Bay invited artists, writers and researchers from both New Zealand and the Netherlands to present their views on the subject.
Ine made a few collages for the design of an installation, titled 'about creatures and things': At the first meeting between the Dutch and the New-Zealanders there mainly was misunderstanding and miscommunication. Did they see each other als human beings? Or a bit more undefined, as creatures? Things? Did the creatures see the other creatures as human beings? Or as things? What did they do with the dead of the others creatures? Did they burry them? Did they sacrifice them? Did they use them as part of a ritual?
